The Federal Ministry of Transportation has confirmed that an infant was among the four people who lost their lives in a train derailment in Delta State. The tragic incident occurred when a train carrying 482 passengers and crew members came off the tracks in Agbor.
Official Statement from the Ministry
Funsho Adebiyi, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, released a statement on Tuesday, June 8, detailing the incident. According to the statement, four coaches capsized while one coach derailed, resulting in the deaths of two adult females, one adult male, and one infant passenger.
The train had 442 booked passengers, along with 40 crew members, security personnel, and third-party service providers, bringing the total number of individuals on board to 482.
Rescue and Evacuation Efforts
Adebiyi noted that rescue and evacuation operations were completed by 6:30 pm. Injured passengers were transported to medical facilities in Agbor for treatment. The ministry reported that 24 people sustained serious injuries, while several others had less severe wounds. One Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) staff member suffered a traumatic limb injury but is reported to be in stable condition after receiving treatment.
Notable Passengers on Board
Among the passengers were Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central, and Patrick Ukah, a former Secretary to the Delta State Government, according to Adebiyi.
Condolences and Investigation
The ministry and the NRC expressed their deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the quick recovery of all those injured. A full investigation into the cause of the accident has commenced. Authorities are working to account for every passenger and provide support to those affected.
