Pastor Ashimolowo Unveils Sports-Themed Estate in Lagos with EPL Street Names
Renowned Nigerian pastor, Mathew Ashimolowo, has officially launched a new estate in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, marking his second major real estate venture. The estate, named Makarios Champion's Place, is designed with a sports theme, featuring 14 streets named after prominent English Premier League clubs, such as Chelsea, Manchester, and Liverpool. This innovative approach highlights Nigeria's deep passion for football and aims to foster unity among residents.
Addressing Housing Deficit with Community Focus
Speaking at the unveiling event on Thursday, March 26, Pastor Ashimolowo emphasized that the estate is part of efforts to tackle Nigeria's significant housing deficit, estimated at between 17 million and 22 million units. He described the development as more than just a housing project, focusing on four core pillars: family, friendship, fun, and football. The estate spans 23 hectares, equivalent to approximately 58 acres, with around 470 sellable plots, of which about 70 had already been sold prior to the official launch.
Infrastructure and Development Plans
Within the estate lies The Villagio, an "estate inside an estate" that will host apartment buildings. Plans include 11 structures with various unit types, such as one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom apartments, and studio options. Pastor Ashimolowo reported that about 46 out of 200 apartments had been sold following roadshows in New York and London. Construction has commenced with piling works, and each five-floor building will be supported by 60 piles for safety. The project offers a 24-month payment plan, with completion expected within 16 to 18 months.
Energy and Pricing Considerations
On infrastructure, the estate will provide electricity using overhead cabling instead of underground systems to manage rising costs, with considerations for solar power options and alternative waste management. Pastor Ashimolowo acknowledged challenges like increasing cement prices but stressed transparency and affordability through interest-free payment plans. He tied the project's credibility to his reputation as a respected cleric, ensuring commitment to quality delivery.
Targeting Diaspora Investment and Future Demand
The estate is being marketed to Nigerians in the diaspora, offering opportunities for short-term rental income via managed Airbnb services. Pastor Ashimolowo pointed to projections that Lagos could become the world's largest city by 2050, driving sustained real estate demand. He highlighted that investors can earn income without residing in Nigeria, leveraging the growing need for quality accommodations in the region.
Company Vision and Community Impact
Oluwafemi Odunlami, Chief Operating Officer of Makarios, stated that the company is focused on creating lasting value beyond housing, emphasizing community benefits and investor returns. Managing director Oluwafemi Adeliba added that the development prioritizes secure titles, regulatory compliance, and infrastructure-led planning, aiming to provide experiences through recreational and commercial facilities. This approach aligns with addressing structural demand in Lagos, fueled by population growth and urban migration.
Pastor Ashimolowo's previous estate, Makarios Luxury Place, set a precedent for high-quality developments, with infrastructure costs running into billions of naira. The new sports-themed estate continues this legacy, aiming to change the narrative in Lagos's real estate corridor while celebrating Nigeria's love for sports and community living.
