In a significant move to strengthen economic bonds, the People's Republic of China has declared its readiness to implement a zero-tariff policy for goods exported from Nigeria. This announcement came directly from the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, during a high-level meeting in Abuja.
A Strategic Move for Stronger Ties
Ambassador Yu Dunhai revealed this pivotal decision during talks with Nigeria's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, on Wednesday, 3 December 2025. The envoy stated that China is prepared to roll out the tariff-free policy ahead of its original schedule. This acceleration is designed to honour two major milestones: the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations and the upcoming 2026 China-Africa Year of Cultural Exchanges.
Ambassador Yu emphasised that these concerted efforts are more than symbolic. He explained they will solidify strategic trust, enhance mutually beneficial cooperation, and ultimately deliver tangible advantages to the citizens of both China and Nigeria. He noted that the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries is now on a fast track, thanks to joint dedication.
China's Commitment to Open Development
Linking the policy to broader national goals, the Chinese Ambassador referenced the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China's recommendations for the 15th Five-Year Plan. He stated this framework underscores China's unwavering commitment to expanding high-standard opening-up and sharing its development opportunities with partner nations across the globe.
This initiative for Nigeria aligns with a larger continental strategy. Earlier in 2025, China announced it would extend zero-tariff treatment to cover 100 per cent of tariff lines for all 53 African countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Beijing.
