The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has taken a significant step toward launching a nationwide digital postcode system after validating a new model that will assign a unique digital address to every addressable building in the country.
Validation Exercise in Abuja
The validation exercise was unveiled in Abuja as part of efforts to create a technology-driven addressing framework aimed at improving service delivery. Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, stated that the system would provide a machine-readable address for buildings across Nigeria.
According to her, the initiative is designed to assign a unique code to every standing building in the country, placing Nigeria among a small number of African nations pursuing such a detailed postcode identification system. She explained that the validation process is necessary to ensure postcode boundaries accurately reflect geographical realities and administrative structures across the federation.
Addressing Diverse Terrain
Odeyemi noted that Nigeria's diverse terrain requires different approaches to address mapping and postcode allocation. She added that what works in northern states such as Jigawa may not be suitable for riverine states like Bayelsa due to differences in geography, population distribution, and settlement patterns. She also stressed that postcode boundaries must align with existing administrative structures and cannot cross local government boundaries.
The validation exercise involves testing aerially generated maps against actual settlement patterns on the ground to confirm that building density, topography, and settlement structures have been accurately captured. Using examples from densely populated areas such as Mushin in Lagos and less crowded locations in Abuja, she said location-specific validation is essential to ensure accuracy.
Federal Government Backing
The development comes as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to deploy a national digital addressing system. Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, recently announced that the first phase of the digital postcode rollout is expected to begin in October.
According to the minister, the project will provide every building in Nigeria, including those in rural communities, with a unique digital address that can support security operations, emergency response, identity verification, and e-commerce activities.
Tijani described the digital postcode as critical national infrastructure capable of addressing long-standing challenges associated with inaccurate address identification, which has complicated crime investigations, emergency dispatch operations, and location verification efforts.
The digital postcode project forms part of broader government investments in digital infrastructure aimed at improving public services, connectivity, and economic development across Nigeria.
