In a decisive move to curb criminal activities, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has announced an indefinite ban on all masquerade displays across the state.
Security Concerns Prompt Immediate Action
The governor made this announcement during a state function, highlighting that the decision was necessitated by a disturbing trend of violent incidents. Criminals have been exploiting the cultural cover of masquerade performances to launch attacks on residents and terrorise communities. Governor Eno stated that these individuals, hiding under the guise of tradition, have been causing significant trouble in several local government areas.
He issued a direct order from his office, declaring, "By my office as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, I’m issuing an order. Anyone caught will be arrested and tried." The governor, acting as the Chief Security Officer of the state, has directed all security agencies to enforce this ban without any exceptions.
Strict Enforcement and Arrests Underway
Governor Eno specifically instructed the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, and other heads of security agencies to arrest and prosecute anyone caught violating this ban. He urged residents to prioritise peace and public safety, adding emphatically, "Let’s stop terrorising people. Let people have peace. All those I see when we’re driving, please let it be said it is hereby banned. No more."
This official action follows recent concerns raised by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command. The police had earlier reported on the menace of "suspected criminal masquerades." Commissioner of Police Baba Azare confirmed that several suspects have already been arrested in connection with these activities and are currently facing prosecution.
The indefinite ban, announced on the 1st of December, 2025, represents a significant step by the state government to restore order and protect its citizens from security threats disguised as cultural expressions.
