A community in Anambra State is reeling and demanding decisive government action after a traditional masquerade caused violent chaos at a funeral, leading to fatal accidents. The incident, which involved the famed but fiery Agaba masquerade, has ignited a serious debate about cultural preservation and public safety.
Violent Disruption at a Solemn Funeral
The peaceful atmosphere of a burial ceremony in Awgbu town, Orumba North Local Government Area, was shattered on Monday, January 12, 2026. The Agaba masquerade, known for its destructive tendencies, made an uninvited appearance at the event. Multiple videos that later went viral on social media captured the masquerade in a violent rampage.
In one distressing clip, the masquerade jumped onto the funeral podium and began destroying the public address system belonging to the master of ceremony. The attack was not limited to property. The masquerade also targeted people, violently pushing over two men who were riding motorcycles peacefully. The two victims, identified as an elderly man and a younger man, reportedly hit their heads on a parked car and died from their injuries.
Police Take Custody and Community Leaders React
Following the widespread circulation of the videos and public outcry, the Anambra State Police Command intervened. On Wednesday, January 14, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, announced that the command had taken the masquerade into custody.
In a strong statement, the police described the masquerade's behavior as "totally unacceptable, unlawful, and will not be tolerated under any guise." The masquerade was officially declared a "suspect" as investigations continue to identify and prosecute all individuals involved in the incident.
While the President General of the Awgbu Progress Union, Mr. Okoyeudor Christian, declined to comment on the matter, another prominent community leader voiced strong condemnation. A title chief, who spoke anonymously to Legit.ng on Friday, January 16, labeled the masquerade's actions as "reprehensible."
A Plea for Government Action to Uphold Cultural Dignity
The anonymous chief emphasized that the violent act betrayed the true purpose of Igbo cultural traditions. "Our cultural traditions, including masquerades, are meant to uphold and promote values of respect, unity, and communal harmony," he stated.
He argued that allowing such reckless behavior to continue tarnishes these customs and directly threatens citizen safety. Consequently, he issued a direct appeal to the state governor. "I hereby call upon the governor of Anambra state, His Excellency, Professor Charles Soludo, to take decisive action by banning the Agaba masquerade from further public displays within our community and beyond," the chief said.
He believes such a ban would serve as a necessary deterrent, ensuring that cultural expressions do not become avenues for violence and disorder. The community's demand highlights a growing tension between preserving heritage and maintaining modern public order.
This incident in Awgbu stands in contrast to other viral moments celebrating Igbo masquerade culture, such as the recent online fascination with the gigantic Ajofia masquerade from Nnewi, which is revered and appears only at major events under strict traditional guidelines.
