The 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba (Dr) Rashidi Ladoja, has made a firm commitment to uphold religious freedom and peaceful coexistence in the ancient city. He gave this assurance on Monday, 15 December 2025, during a courtesy visit by worshippers of the Egungun Eleriko masquerade to his palace at Oke-Aremo, Ibadan.
A Father to All Faiths
Addressing the visitors, Oba Ladoja described himself as a "father of all religions." He welcomed the Egungun adherents just as he would welcome any other religious group, emphasizing that his palace is open to all. The monarch stated clearly that the rights of all citizens to practice their faith without fear of molestation, intimidation, or persecution will remain sacrosanct during his reign.
"I need your prayers to sustain me, promote peaceful coexistence, and ensure the safety and prosperity of Ibadanland," Oba Ladoja told the gathering. He stressed that tolerance and harmony among all faiths would not be compromised under his watch.
Traditional Support and Promises of Prosperity
The leader of the Eleriko masquerade group, Iyalode Atiba, spoke on behalf of the worshippers. She noted that it is a long-standing tradition for the masquerade society to support any sitting Olubadan. Iyalode Atiba pledged the full backing of the Eleriko worshippers to Oba Ladoja.
She promised that his reign would be marked by unprecedented peace, religious harmony, and economic prosperity for all residents of Ibadanland. This visit, detailed in a press release by the Olubadan's Chief Press Secretary, Chief Ayoade Solomon Olugbemiga, underscores the traditional institution's role in fostering unity.
Royal Gathering for Harmony
The event was a significant gathering that highlighted the collective commitment to peace. Several prominent traditional rulers were in attendance to witness the pledge. The dignitaries present included:
- Oba (Dr) Sefiu Olawale Oyebola Adeyeri III, the Aseyin of Iseyin.
- Oba Salawudeen Amidu Ajibade, the Ashipa Olubadan of Ibadanland.
- Oba Dauda Abiodun Azees, the Ashipa Balogun of Ibadanland.
They were joined by leaders of the masquerade society and their followers, reinforcing a united front for interfaith dialogue.
This occasion reinforces Ibadan's enduring reputation as a model city for religious tolerance. The active involvement of the traditional institution serves as a cornerstone for maintaining the peaceful coexistence that has long been associated with the community.
