Police Confirm Arrest and Condemn Actions

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the suspect was in custody. He strongly condemned the behaviour displayed in the viral video.

"The command notes that the behaviour of the masquerade, as seen in the viral video currently in circulation, is totally unacceptable, unlawful, and will not be tolerated under any guise," Ikenga stated. He assured the public that investigations are actively ongoing to identify and apprehend all other individuals involved in the violent episode.

History of Masquerade Violence in Anambra

This recent event is not an isolated case of masquerade-related violence in Anambra State. In February 2025, the state government declared a masquerader known as "Nweke" wanted for the alleged killing of a 71-year-old man, Shedrack Okoye, during an outing in Umuawulu, Awka South LGA.

State officials have repeatedly emphasized that such acts violate the Anambra State law on masquerading enacted in 2022. The Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Don Onyenji, has previously clarified that the law mandates masquerade displays to be confined to designated arenas during festivals. The law explicitly prohibits masquerades from obstructing movement, blocking roads, or causing public disturbances, reiterating that the practice is meant for cultural entertainment, not violence.

The police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order, ensuring that cultural practices do not become a cover for criminal activities that threaten public safety.
