Education Minister Tunji Alausa Named Most Innovative Under Tinubu's Cabinet

In a significant recognition of governmental efforts, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has been honored as the Most Innovative Cabinet Minister of the Year 2025 by Independent Newspapers Limited. The award ceremony took place on Saturday at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos, where Alausa was represented by the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Ishaq Oloyede.

Acceptance and Humility

Following the event, Alausa expressed his gratitude in a statement posted on X, emphasizing that the award reflects collective achievements rather than personal glory. He described it as a testament to the ongoing reforms in Nigeria's education sector, which he leads with a focus on collaboration and systemic change.

Key Initiatives and Reforms

Under Alausa's leadership, several transformative initiatives have been launched to revitalize education in Nigeria:

  • Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET): Strengthened with N2.97 billion disbursed in stipends to approximately 160,000 young Nigerians, alongside an additional N4.6 billion allocated for skills training centers.
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences (STEMM): Expanded to foster innovation, including the Student Venture Capital Grant offering up to N50 million per project for undergraduate students in 300 level and above, plus mentorship support.
  • Nigerian Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI): Established to enhance data systems for better planning and oversight.
  • Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF): Expanded to support academic staff, contributing to stabilized university operations through a formal agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) effective January 1, 2026.

Collaborative Approach and Broader Impact

Alausa attributed the progress to a "one-government approach", involving partnerships with federal ministries, education agencies, and subnational governments. These reforms are part of the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), launched under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.

Additional measures include a N1 billion fund for students in public polytechnics pursuing STEM and vocational training, and the introduction of biometric attendance systems to improve accountability in educational institutions.

Background and Future Directions

Alausa, a nephrologist by training, was redeployed as education minister in October 2024. Since then, he has prioritized shifting from rote learning to skills-based education, increasing funding, and enhancing data infrastructure. The award was part of the Silver Jubilee celebration marking the 25th anniversary of Independent Newspapers Limited, which recognized contributions across business, politics, and public service.

While acknowledging ongoing challenges in the education sector, Alausa noted that reforms are gaining traction and implementation is progressing steadily. "There is still much to do but the direction is clear. And we are moving," he stated, highlighting a commitment to continued improvement and innovation in Nigeria's educational landscape.
