Nigeria's Ministry of Education Launches ESSVerify Portal for Digital Academic Credential Verification
The Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria has officially launched the ESSVerify portal, a comprehensive online platform designed to revolutionize the process of academic credential verification. This innovative system replaces the traditional method that required physical visits to ministry offices, introducing a fully digital approach that promises greater efficiency and accessibility for applicants across the country and abroad.
Streamlining Verification Through Digital Transformation
According to official statements from the ministry, the ESSVerify portal represents a significant step in the government's broader digital transformation agenda. The platform aims to address long-standing challenges associated with credential authentication, including excessive delays, cumbersome paperwork, and the logistical difficulties of in-person submissions. By moving the entire process online, the ministry seeks to enhance data management, strengthen the integrity of academic records, and improve overall public service delivery.
Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations for the Ministry of Education, emphasized that the old system created opportunities for delays and bureaucratic friction that often frustrated Nigerians seeking to authenticate their educational qualifications. The automated platform is expected to simplify procedures and significantly reduce processing times, though its ultimate success will depend on effective execution and the adaptation of educational institutions to the new requirements.
Step-by-Step Guide to Using the ESSVerify Portal
Step 1: Account Creation
Users must first visit essverify.education.gov.ng and sign up to create an account. This account serves as the gateway to the entire verification process, so it is crucial to provide accurate and accessible information during registration, as users will need to log back in to track their applications.
Step 2: Document Upload
Once the account is established, applicants can submit their documents for authentication or evaluation directly through the portal. Clear and complete scans are essential, as blurry or incomplete documents can cause unnecessary delays in the verification process.
Step 3: Transcript Request Protocol
This step requires particular attention, as applicants cannot submit their own transcripts. Instead, the academic institution—whether a university, polytechnic, or college of education—must send the transcript directly from an official institutional email address to ess1@education.gov.ng. Applicants are advised to contact their institution's registry early, as this aspect of the process is beyond their direct control and academic registries may not always respond quickly.
Step 4: Payment Processing
Payment is handled directly on the portal, with a reported fee of N4,000 per page. Applicants should factor this cost into their budget before beginning the process, especially if they have multi-page transcripts that will incur higher charges.
Step 5: Application Tracking
After submission and payment, users can monitor the status of their verification through the portal's dashboard. This feature eliminates the need for phone calls or physical follow-ups, providing real-time updates on the progress of each application.
Scope and Implementation Timeline
The ESSVerify system currently covers all federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across Nigeria. State and private institutions are being onboarded in phases, meaning applicants from these institutions should monitor ministry updates for when their schools become integrated into the platform.
Dr. Moruf Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, highlighted that the fully automated process represents a major advancement in educational administration, removing previous barriers that discouraged many from authenticating their credentials due to the stress and inconvenience of physical visits.
The ministry anticipates that this digital shift will not only improve efficiency but also enhance the credibility of Nigeria's academic verification system, benefiting both domestic applicants and the diaspora community seeking to validate their educational qualifications for various purposes.
