The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday in observance of the 2026 International Workers' Day. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the federal government, during a press briefing held in Abuja on Thursday, April 30.
Minister Extols Workers' Contributions
Dr. Tunji-Ojo extended his heartfelt congratulations to the entire Nigerian workforce for their unwavering dedication and continuous contributions to the nation's progress. In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Minister lauded the resilience and commitment of Nigerian laborers, describing them as the essential engine driving the country's growth and economic prosperity.
“The efforts of Nigerian workers are essential for the nation’s growth and prosperity,” the Minister stated. He encouraged all workers to remain steadfast in their commitment to national development and to continue upholding the values of hard work and patriotism.

Tunji-Ojo further urged employees across both the public and private sectors to embrace the values of patriotism and high productivity.
