FG Unveils N20m Laureate Prize for Top Student Researchers

The Federal Government has officially launched a groundbreaking national laureate prize programme, designed to reward exceptional academic research by students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria. Announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, this initiative aims to position research as a central driver of national development and innovation.

Prize Structure and Benefits

Under the new programme, doctoral students will be eligible for top prizes of up to N20 million for outstanding theses and dissertations, accompanied by national honours. Master's degree winners will receive N10 million, while undergraduate dissertation winners will be awarded at least N5 million. This structured reward system is intended to elevate the status of academic research, ensuring it garners the same prestige as other high-profile sectors in the country.

Dr. Alausa emphasized that the initiative signals a significant shift in national priorities, placing intellectual achievement and innovation at the forefront of recognition. He highlighted that student research could provide practical solutions to Nigeria's pressing economic and industrial challenges, thereby contributing directly to national growth.

Funding and Committee Oversight

The programme will be funded by the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) and its partners, ensuring sustainability without imposing additional financial burdens on the government. A 10-member National Laureate Prize Committee, chaired by Prof. Abubakar Sambo, has been inaugurated to oversee the submission, screening, and selection of winners nationwide.

According to a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the ministry, Folasade Boriowo, the initiative is set to kick off with a call for entries in May 2026. Evaluations will be conducted between June and September, with winners honoured at a National Laureate Gala in November in Abuja. This marks a new era where academic research is not merely a graduation requirement but a pathway to national recognition and substantial financial reward.

Results-Driven Model for Digital Research Clusters

In a related development, the Federal Government has adopted a results-driven model for its N12 billion National Digital Economy Research Clusters programme. Announced by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, this initiative ties funding and support to measurable outputs and policy relevance.

Dr. Tijani disclosed at a media briefing in Abuja that the three-year programme will allocate roughly N1.5 billion to each thematic cluster, focusing on generating practical insights to inform digital economy policy. The clusters are designed to strengthen Nigeria's research capacity by involving post-doctoral fellows, PhD students, and collaborations with foreign researchers.

Enhancing University Innovation

Earlier, Dr. Alausa highlighted that the digital research clusters would position universities as engines of innovation and talent development. Students participating in these clusters will gain skills in key areas such as software development, cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and Information Technology (IT) automation.

He stressed that universities must evolve beyond theoretical education to become hubs for building the capacity of millions of youths. Participants will have access to professional certifications from leading tech companies like Google, IBM, and Microsoft, stimulating entrepreneurship and economic growth by linking research to practical solutions.

Dr. Alausa added, "It's not just about the 200 researchers. It's the cascading effect that will happen afterwards. It won't stop here. It will just continue to grow with what we're starting today." This comprehensive approach underscores the government's commitment to fostering a culture of excellence and innovation in Nigeria's academic and digital landscapes.
