NASoW Lagos Advocates for Unity During 2026 Social Work Month Celebrations
As social workers worldwide commemorate Social Work Month and International Social Work Day in 2026, the Nigeria Association of Social Workers Lagos State Chapter has issued a powerful call for enhanced collective action to tackle the escalating divisions within contemporary society. This year's significant theme, "Co-Building Hope and Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society," underscores the urgent necessity for individuals, communities, institutions, and governmental bodies to collaborate in fostering unity, inclusion, and overall social wellbeing.
Addressing Societal Divisions
In a detailed statement regarding the theme's importance, the Chairperson of NASoW Lagos State Chapter, Mrs. Modupeola Sahid-Adebambo, highlighted that numerous social challenges currently confronting society are exacerbated by deepening divisions across various spheres, including families, workplaces, and broader communities. She elaborated, "Our society is grappling with multiple forms of division, ranging from family conflicts and political polarization to ethnic, religious, and social discrimination. These fractures undermine relationships and detrimentally impact the wellbeing of both individuals and communities. As dedicated social workers, we firmly believe that cultivating hope and harmony necessitates open dialogue, mutual understanding, and shared collective responsibility."
Mrs. Sahid-Adebambo further emphasized that the concept of Harambee, derived from Swahili and meaning "pulling together," perfectly encapsulates the critical role of collaboration in resolving social issues and reinforcing community bonds. This principle serves as a foundational guide for the association's initiatives during this commemorative period.
Engagement Activities Across Lagos
To mark Social Work Month 2026, the NASoW Lagos Chapter has planned a series of impactful activities designed to engage the public and promote social cohesion. These initiatives include:
- Media Appearances: Social workers will participate in various media platforms to discuss pressing social issues affecting families and communities, aiming to raise public awareness and stimulate constructive conversations.
- School Outreach Programmes: Targeted efforts across Lagos State schools will focus on educating and empowering students with positive values that encourage understanding, tolerance, and responsible citizenship.
These activities are strategically aimed at not only highlighting critical social concerns but also actively promoting the core values of unity, respect, and peaceful coexistence within the diverse population of Lagos.
A Call for Collaborative Support
Mrs. Sahid-Adebambo extended a heartfelt appeal to government institutions, community leaders, civil society organizations, and all citizens to actively support endeavors aimed at strengthening family structures and enhancing social cohesion. She stated, "Addressing the multifaceted challenges in our society requires a united effort from every sector. By promoting empathy, respecting our differences, and offering mutual support, we can forge stronger communities and cultivate a more peaceful and harmonious society for all."
Additionally, she reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of NASoW Lagos to advancing professional social work practices and advocating tirelessly for the protection and wellbeing of vulnerable individuals and families throughout the state. The association encourages everyone to embrace the spirit of co-building hope and harmony, recognizing that sustainable social development is achievable only when societies unite for the common good.
