UNIMED Researcher Clinches Prestigious Global Award for Antimicrobial Resistance Breakthrough

A distinguished lecturer from the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) in Ondo has achieved significant international recognition for her pioneering research on antimicrobial resistance, securing a top investigator award at a major scientific conference held in Kenya. Oluwatope Bamimore, a faculty member in the Department of Pharmacognosy and Herbal Medicine within the Faculty of Pharmacy, was honored at the 4th International Symposium on Streptococcus agalactiae Disease (ISSAD 2026).

Global Recognition at International Symposium

The symposium attracted more than 200 researchers and experts from 37 countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Brazil, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Pakistan, and South Africa. Among numerous participants, only six exceptional researchers were acknowledged for their contributions, with Bamimore standing out as one of the best GBS investigators. Her award-winning research, titled “Uvaria chamae Compounds as Natural Inhibitors of GBS Virulence”, focuses on developing local plant-based solutions to combat bacterial infections, offering a novel approach in the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Impact on Public Health and Scientific Innovation

Bamimore's work is critically important in addressing the escalating global challenge of antimicrobial resistance, which threatens public health worldwide. Her study supports the urgent need for new treatments targeting drug-resistant infections, leveraging natural compounds from indigenous plants. Following her achievement, Bamimore expressed deep gratitude, describing the recognition as a tremendous honor that underscores the accomplishments of early-career researchers. She emphasized that this award validates the scientific merit and innovative nature of her research, demonstrating its real-world impact and future potential in advancing infectious disease studies and public health initiatives.
