The Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has reaffirmed its dedication to cultivating the next generation of African engineers, innovators, and industrial leaders by hosting outstanding students from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) for an educational tour of Africa's largest refinery complex.
Fulfilling a Promise
This visit fulfilled a commitment made by Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, during the university's 37th public lecture. He had pledged to expose exceptional students to world-class industrial operations, aiming to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world industry experience.
Delegation and Interactive Session
The delegation, led by FUTO Vice Chancellor Prof. Nnenna Oti, included top-performing students from engineering, technology, and entrepreneurship disciplines. During an interactive session, Managing Director and CEO of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, David Bird, described the facility as a compelling example of how innovation, advanced technology, and private sector investment can drive economic transformation while creating opportunities for young Africans.
Bird noted that the refinery, widely regarded as the world's largest single-train refinery, represents the peak of technological sophistication on the African continent. He emphasized that exposure to such facilities is critical to reshaping perceptions about Africa's industrial sector. Bird also disclosed plans to deepen collaboration with universities and research institutions, particularly in emerging fields like renewable energy and sustainable fuel technologies.

Prof. Nnenna Oti described the visit as a transformative and life-changing experience for the students, aligning with ongoing efforts to strengthen academia-industry partnerships. She noted that the students were personally invited by Aliko Dangote earlier in the year, underscoring the transformative impact of visionary African entrepreneurship in driving industrialization and economic growth.

Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies, Prof. Abraham Ngwuta, and Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Chikwendu Emenike Orji, described Aliko Dangote as a model entrepreneur. They highlighted that his diverse investments across critical sectors demonstrate the power of vision, discipline, and long-term value creation. They noted that his industrial footprint offers a practical framework for students to understand entrepreneurship as a driver of national development, job creation, and economic transformation.
