Junior WAEC (BECE) Explained: Subjects, Fees, Scoring, and More
Junior WAEC (BECE) Explained: Subjects, Fees, Scoring

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), commonly called Junior WAEC, is Nigeria's national exit exam for Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3) students, administered by the National Examinations Council (NECO). This article details everything about the exam, including subjects, registration fees, scoring, result checking, and the certificate's utility.

What is the Junior WAEC (BECE)?

The BECE is the official assessment for students completing JSS3, certifying completion of the nine-year Basic Education programme. It serves as the primary gateway to Senior Secondary School (SS1) admission. In Nigeria, the BECE is administered by state ministries of education under NECO's supervision, while NECO directly organizes exams for Unity Schools, Armed Forces Secondary Schools, and other federal government schools.

Who Can Sit for Junior WAEC?

Only JSS3 final-year students are eligible. The NECO BECE is exclusively for school-based candidates in Nigeria and overseas. Private candidates cannot register directly; registration must be through schools approved by the State Ministry of Education or NECO.

Subjects in Junior WAEC

Eighteen subjects are offered at the BECE level. Candidates must choose a minimum of eleven and a maximum of thirteen subjects. Core compulsory subjects include English Language, Mathematics, Basic Science & Technology, National Values Education, Cultural & Creative Arts, and Pre-Vocational Studies. Other subjects include Social Studies, History, Christian/Islamic Religious Studies, Business Studies, Home Economics, Computer Studies, French, and Physical & Health Education. Six Nigerian languages (Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, etc.) are offered, from which candidates choose one.

Junior WAEC Registration: Fees and Process

The registration fee for the 2026 BECE is ₦8,700 per candidate. Additional costs include an unviable centre fee of ₦12,500 for schools with fewer than 20 candidates, a syllabus fee of ₦1,500 per copy (schools advised to have at least four copies), a late submission penalty of ₦25,000 for failing to upload Continuous Assessment (CA3) scores on time, and a late registration penalty of ₦2,000 per candidate.

Registration is both offline and online. Schools download the BECE offline application from NECO's website (neco.gov.ng). Steps include: existing schools log in; new schools create an account with an official school email and number. Schools enter candidates' bio-data offline and synchronize online periodically. An invoice is generated based on candidate count, paid at approved banks. Continuous Assessment scores are uploaded, and examination cards are printed.

How Junior WAEC is Scored

The BECE uses a five-grade scale: A (Excellent, 80–100%), B (Very Good, 60–79%), C (Credit/Good, 50–59%), P (Pass, 40–49%), and F (Fail, 0–39%). This differs from the SSCE's A1–F9 scale. A candidate passes if they pass six subjects, including English and Mathematics. NECO conducts a resit for candidates who fail English and Mathematics only.

How to Check Junior WAEC Results

NECO released the 2026 BECE results for 186,291 candidates on 26 June 2026. To check online, visit results.neco.gov.ng, select "BECE (JUNIOR WAEC)" as exam type, enter examination number and year, purchase a result-checking token (scratch card) online or at the state BECE office, and enter the PIN. State BECE results are checked via each state's own portal (e.g., Kwara State uses kwarabece.com).

2026 BECE Resit Dates

The official resit examination is scheduled for Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd July 2026.

What Can You Do with a Junior WAEC Certificate?

The BECE certifies completion of the nine-year Basic Education programme and is required for Senior Secondary School (SS1) admission.
