Lagos State Promotes Road Safety Education Among Schoolchildren
Lagos Promotes Road Safety Education for Schoolchildren

The Lagos State Government has reiterated that educating children on road safety is essential for reducing accidents and fostering responsible citizenship. This was stated by the state’s Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during a road safety and transport awareness session held for pupils of St. Saviour's School, Ikoyi.

Interactive Learning Session

The event utilized storytelling, adventure, and practical demonstrations to teach fundamental road safety principles. Osiyemi emphasized that the future of road safety begins with education, noting that when children grasp safety, awareness, and responsibility at a young age, they become better road users and responsible citizens.

Call for Collaboration

The commissioner called for stronger partnerships between government agencies and private organizations to deliver road safety messages in creative and engaging ways that children can easily understand and remember.

Partnership with Lumi

The school outreach was executed in collaboration with the children's educational brand Lumi. The initiative aims to strengthen road safety awareness among schoolchildren through an interactive learning program designed to cultivate a generation of responsible and safety-conscious road users.

Facilitator's Background

The program was facilitated by Pelumi Nubi, founder of Lumi, who serves as Lagos State Tourism Ambassador and is the first woman to complete a solo 10,000-kilometer drive from London to Lagos. Nubi shared that her journey inspired the creation of Lumi, a purple cartoon car that teaches children courage, curiosity, kindness, and an understanding of the world through storytelling.

Topics Covered

During the session, pupils learned about safe pedestrian practices, the meaning of traffic lights, road signs, pedestrian crossings, and safety measures when using buses, trains, and ferries. The program also encouraged children to make responsible travel decisions while building confidence and civic responsibility.
