The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) has officially commenced the bid-opening process for the 2023/2024 Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Intervention Projects. This step reaffirms the board's dedication to transparency, accountability, and high-quality project delivery in the education sector.
Bid Opening Exercise Details
The bid opening exercise took place after the submission deadline on Tuesday, marking the end of the bidding phase and the beginning of the evaluation process. A total of 75 contractors participated, submitting bids for consideration under the intervention projects. Successful bidders will be announced once the assessment process is completed, in line with procurement guidelines.
Officials' Statements
During the ceremony, LASUBEB Chairman Dr. Hakeem Shittu described the exercise as a crucial stage in ensuring fairness and openness in government procurement. He noted that the projects were publicly advertised and bidders were given sufficient time to submit their applications. Shittu emphasized that Lagos State has strengthened public procurement through technology adoption, with the electronic process allowing stakeholders to observe proceedings openly.
He advised successful contractors to focus on quality delivery and comply with approved timelines. Shittu reminded them that projects must be executed strictly according to specifications and standards. He further disclosed that the board would deploy competent engineers and technical professionals to supervise implementation and ensure projects meet approved standards.
The Chief Procurement Officer of the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency (PPA), Ogundare Akintayo, stated that all submitted bids would proceed to evaluation before successful ones are announced. Akintayo added that any identified shortcomings would be communicated by the supervising ministry for correction, and procurement regulations impose sanctions on contractors who fail to meet their obligations.
Representing the Executive Secretary of UBEC, State Coordinator Sunday Joshua commended Lagos State's adoption of technology in public procurement. He noted that the transition from paper-based bidding to an electronic process has improved openness and strengthened confidence in project implementation. Joshua added that monitoring would involve collaboration between UBEC and LASUBEB to ensure standards are maintained and public funds are effectively utilized. He advised contractors to deliver projects that would stand the test of time and contribute positively to educational development.
Project Impact
The intervention projects aim to support infrastructure development across Lagos public schools through classroom construction, renovation works, and other educational improvement initiatives designed to strengthen teaching and learning outcomes.
