Dr. Kenechi Aliche Earns PhD in Midwifery from University of Port Harcourt
A Nigerian woman, Kenechi Aliche, has achieved a significant milestone by earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Midwifery from the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT). Despite being a married woman with children, she successfully completed her doctoral studies and shared her inspiring journey on LinkedIn.
Aliche, who holds multiple academic qualifications including RN, RM, RPHN, BNSc, PGDE, and MSc, is also a four-time Best Graduating Student—a streak that began in primary school. She described academic excellence as a consistent part of her life.
Doctoral Research on Lead Exposure and Pregnancy Outcomes
Her PhD research focused on a comparative study of blood lead levels and pregnancy outcomes among pregnant women in Umuahia and Port Harcourt. The study assessed whether elevated blood lead levels were associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and compared the prevalence of such outcomes across the two populations.
Additionally, she conducted a systematic review on the effect of paternal lead exposure on pregnancy outcomes, highlighting that paternal lead exposure can also influence pregnancy outcomes—a factor often overlooked. The findings have been published and are available online.
Passion for Maternal and Newborn Health
Dr. Aliche expressed that her passion for maternal and newborn health, particularly safe motherhood, drives her work. She created a Facebook page called Safe Motherhood Naija to build a community dedicated to advocacy, education, and research in maternal and child health.
She stated: "My passion for maternal and newborn health, particularly safe motherhood, continues to drive my work. It is also the reason I created this page Safe Motherhood Naija on FB, which is still in its infancy. I would be grateful if you followed along as we build a community dedicated to advocacy, education, and research in maternal and child health."
Open to Collaborations and Research Opportunities
Dr. Aliche is open to partnerships, collaborations, engagements, and research opportunities that advance the health and wellbeing of women, mothers, babies, and families. Her achievement has been celebrated by many who came across her post on social media.
