The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has officially denied social media reports alleging that the Federal Government has suspended the payment of upkeep allowances for students under the loan scheme. In a statement released on Wednesday, the agency described the claims as entirely false and intended to cause unnecessary panic among students and the general public.
Official Denial
Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the Director of Strategic Communications at NELFUND, emphasized that neither the Federal Government nor the fund has issued any directive to halt the payment of upkeep allowances. He urged students to remain calm and disregard the rumors, which he said were designed to create distrust in the program.
Fake Newspaper Cover
NELFUND also distanced itself from a viral newspaper cover circulating online, which falsely suggested that the allowance suspension was reported by the Nigerian Tribune. The agency confirmed that the publication did not originate from the Tribune and advised the public to verify information from official sources before sharing.
The fund reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigerian students through the loan scheme and encouraged beneficiaries to continue their academic pursuits without fear of disruption. It also called on the media and social media users to avoid spreading unverified news that could undermine public confidence in government initiatives.
