UI Graduate Opens Up About Repeating Year 2

MoyosoreOluwa Onipede, a graduate of the University of Ibadan, has shared the story behind her decision to repeat Year 2 and how she ultimately earned an award for her final-year project. In a detailed post on her LinkedIn page, she explained that she began her university studies in Russian with a minor in French but later made a difficult pivot to Communication and Language Arts in Year 3, which required her to start over from Year 2.

"That decision meant repeating Year 2. While everything and everyone I knew to be familiar seemed to progress, I had to start again. And starting again is far too humbling," she wrote. She emphasized that sometimes the bravest choice is to abandon a path that no longer fits, even if it means not finishing on time.

Building a Career Alongside Academics

During her undergraduate years, Onipede actively built a career in the entertainment industry. She listed several accomplishments, including working with artist Mohbad, producing four editions of Bella Shmurda's Tension Rave, chaperoning and handling welfare for four film productions, interning at TRACE as a Trace Troop, producing a university tour and two concerts at UI, and managing countless events across Nigeria.

In Year 2, she also served as Deputy Spokesperson of her faculty's Legislative Council, where she learned that communication is about influence, representation, and responsibility. These experiences shaped her academic and professional journey.

Final-Year Project Wins Prestigious Award

Onipede's final-year project earned the Brigadier Abdulkarim Adisa Prize in Political Communication, awarded for the best final-year project on a communication theme relevant to the Nigerian political landscape. "That award felt bigger than academic validation. It felt like confirmation," she said.

Social Media Reactions

Many social media users reacted to her story with praise and encouragement. Farinloye Motunrayo commented, "You did great? weldone." Sharon Ntan wrote, "This is a fun, fun fact because Russian? ??? I mean, I can never put that past you now that I think of it. Congratulations Mo Moneyyyy and cheers to many many more new and beautiful beginnings."
