How Webometrics Ranks Universities
The Webometrics ranking, published twice a year, assesses universities based on three key indicators: visibility, openness, and excellence. These metrics measure an institution's digital presence, the accessibility of its scholarly content, and the impact of its research output. The ranking covers more than 32,000 higher education institutions worldwide, providing a comprehensive overview of global academic performance.
This edition's results highlight the competitive standing of Nigerian universities on the international stage. While UI and UNILAG lead the national pack, their global positions underscore the gap between Nigeria's top institutions and the world's leading universities.

Beyond the top four, other Nigerian universities also performed well. Landmark University ranks fifth nationally at 1,659th globally, followed by the University of Ilorin at 1,883rd and Obafemi Awolowo University at 1,986th. Ahmadu Bello University holds the eighth spot at 2,068th, the University of Port Harcourt ranks ninth at 2,077th, and the Federal University of Technology, Akure, rounds out the top ten at 2,203rd.
Further down the list, Nnamdi Azikiwe University is 11th in Nigeria (2,308th globally), Bayero University Kano is 12th (2,543rd), and the University of Calabar is 13th (2,592nd). Other institutions in the top 50 include Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Olabisi Onabanjo University, the University of Benin, Lagos State University, and the National Open University of Nigeria.
Global Leaders and Nigeria's Position
At the global level, Harvard University retains the top spot, followed by Stanford University in second place. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranks third, the University of Oxford fourth, and Cornell University fifth. The University of Washington, University of Michigan, University of California Berkeley, Johns Hopkins University, and Columbia University complete the top ten.
American universities dominate the global top ten, holding seven positions, while the United Kingdom's Oxford and Cambridge are also represented. The University of Toronto is the highest-ranked Canadian institution, sitting 12th worldwide. Despite UI's strong national performance, Nigeria's best-ranked university remains outside the global top 1,000 in this edition, reflecting the ongoing challenges and opportunities for Nigerian higher education on the world stage.
