The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), in collaboration with the Adamawa State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, has officially unveiled the revised National Teacher Policy. This initiative aims to strengthen teaching standards and improve education delivery across the state.
The event took place in Yola under the European Union–UNESCO programme titled 'Education and Youth Empowerment in Nigeria (Phase II): Expand, Integrate and Strengthen Systems (EISS) to Build Teachers’ Capacity and Resilience.'
Government Commitment to Educational Reform
The Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Umar Pella, assured stakeholders that the state government remains fully committed to working with development partners. He emphasized the goal of strengthening educational planning, policy implementation, and service delivery throughout Adamawa State.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB), Murtala Babayi, pledged sustained collaboration with partners. He reiterated the board's dedication to repositioning the education sector and enhancing the quality of teaching and learning at all levels.
Modernising the Teaching Profession
Presenting the policy framework, the Deputy Director at the Federal Ministry of Education, Godwin Egbunefu, explained that the reforms are designed to modernise the teaching profession. He disclosed that the revised policy focuses on several key areas: continuous professional development, improved welfare for teachers, digital literacy, inclusiveness, and resilience.
“It is designed to reposition the teaching profession and equip educators with the skills required to meet modern learning demands,” Egbunefu stated.
Implementation Strategies and MoU Signing
The Technical Lead of the EISS–EU Project at UNESCO, Hyelataina Bernard, guided stakeholders on implementation strategies across relevant agencies. The session also included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to formalise commitments.
Organisers described the policy as a major milestone in strengthening education delivery in Adamawa State. “It is a significant step toward improving the quality of teaching and learning, ensuring that teachers in Adamawa State are better prepared to address emerging challenges in education,” a spokesperson noted.
