Adisa Blessing Oluwafikayo, a First-Class Mathematics graduate from the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.76 out of 5.0, has earned a fully funded Master's scholarship to study Mathematics at the University of Calabria in Italy. Her academic achievement and subsequent public appeal for financial support to cover relocation costs drew widespread attention, culminating in intervention by former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Academic Excellence Leads to International Opportunity
Blessing announced her achievement via X on Friday, July 3, introducing herself as "a First-Class Mathematics graduate (CGPA: 4.76/5.0) from UNILORIN" and revealing that she had been "awarded a fully funded Master's scholarship in Mathematics at the University of Calabria, Italy." Her story resonated with many Nigerians who praised her determination to pursue advanced education abroad.
Funding Gap Threatens Scholarship
Although the scholarship covered tuition and other academic expenses, Blessing still needed funds for her visa application, flight ticket, and initial settlement in Italy. She appealed to Nigerians on social media with the message: "Help Make My Scholarship Dream Come True." The appeal quickly gained traction, with many citizens commending her resilience and academic excellence.
Bukola Saraki Steps In
Former Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki responded to the appeal on Saturday, July 4, pledging to cover all remaining relocation and travel expenses. In an X post, he wrote: "No young person who has worked this hard should have such an opportunity limited by the cost of getting there. It would be my privilege to support your journey by covering what is left in the cost of your relocation." He added that his office would reach out to her that day.
Broader Context of International Scholarships for Nigerians
Blessing's success comes amid other fully funded scholarship opportunities for Nigerians. Australia's 2026 Research Training Programme offers scholarships for research-based Master's and PhD degrees, covering full tuition, an annual living stipend, and approved research expenses. Similarly, the Embassy of Ireland in Nigeria announced the 2026 Ireland Fellows Programme, offering fully funded one-year Master's scholarships to eligible Nigerian professionals. That programme covers tuition, flights, visa costs, accommodation, health insurance, and monthly allowances, with applications open from June 29 to July 26.
