UNIPORT Student Wrote UTME 4 Times, Graduates with 2.1

A Nigerian lady, Ezinne Ojukwu, has expressed immense joy as she finally concluded her studies at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), graduating with a second-class upper degree. She shared her achievements and how she ended up studying a different course instead of the medicine and surgery she had initially hoped for. Her story triggered reactions on social media, with many celebrating her achievement.

Academic Journey

On her LinkedIn page, Ojukwu provided a detailed timeline of her academic journey. She revealed that she wrote the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) four times because she was determined to study medicine. Her post read: "A Grad who ATE. With a dangerous 2.1, all the way from Abagana. (That was all I had planned to say) But for some reason, I feel nudged to share more, so I'll go a little deeper."

She outlined her journey as follows:

  • 2017: Completed secondary school
  • 2017–2020: Attempted JAMB four times in pursuit of Medicine. This period was filled with sorrows and prayers. Her mantra was "Medicine or nothing."
  • 2020: Gave up and accepted Microbiology. She did not care much for it, simply tired of a draining cycle.
  • 2020–2025: Academic timeline with strikes and an involuntary school break.
  • 2026: Graduation.

Overcoming Challenges

Ojukwu noted that switching from Medicine to Microbiology dampened her spirit and made her feel inadequate. She aimed for a 2:1, believing that was attainable. It was not until her final year that she realized a first-class degree was within reach, but it was too late to change her grade. She advised current university students: "Don't let past experiences or anyone define what you can and cannot achieve. The sky is not too far for you to reach."

Reactions on Social Media

Her story garnered several reactions on LinkedIn. Princess Jane Okah congratulated her and mentioned that she also graduated from UNIPORT. Favoured Oruche noted that they studied Microbiology together and asked which school she attended. Adebukola Folarin praised her, saying, "You look scrumptious I love it. Anything is possible. Congratulations dear."

In a related story, UNILAG's best graduating student shared how he was rejected by the University of Ibadan, while another graduate staged a one-man protest over unemployment.
