COWA Targets Climate Action in Schools with Green Border Initiative

The Customs Officers' Wives Association (COWA) has launched a significant climate change initiative, focusing on schools as a key platform for environmental action. This effort, part of the broader Green Border Initiative, aims to combat climate change, promote cleaner air, and encourage environmental responsibility in border communities and surrounding areas.

Emphasis on Schools and Communities

During the inauguration of Sustainability and Green Border Ambassadors in Idiroko, the National President of COWA, Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi, highlighted that climate action must begin in schools, homes, and communities. She explained that the theme, "Green Barracks, Green Borders: Advancing Environmental Stewardship for a Carbon-Responsible Future," was deliberately chosen to prepare future leaders on the importance of maintaining a healthy environment.

Mrs Adeniyi stressed that schools remain one of the most effective platforms for addressing climate challenges such as rising temperatures, flooding, and environmental pollution. She stated, "We are not just planting trees today; we are planting responsibility and leadership in our children. Climate action begins in our schools, homes and communities."

Nurturing Environmentally Conscious Students

The initiative, tagged the "Adopt-a-School Campaign," is designed to nurture environmentally conscious students. It focuses on practical ways of protecting the climate, including tree planting, waste reduction, and sustainable living. Mrs Adeniyi added, "One tree can absorb carbon dioxide, improve the air we breathe and protect our environment. When multiplied across communities, these small actions make a big difference."

Support from Customs Officials

Also speaking at the event, the Acting Customs Area Controller for Ogun I Area Command, Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni, described the programme as timely and aligned with both national and global environmental goals. He noted, "A greener border environment is essential not only for our communities but also for achieving safe, secure and prosperous borders."

Deputy Comptroller Afeni emphasized that the Green Border Initiative complements the mandate of the Nigeria Customs Service by strengthening partnerships with host communities while promoting sustainability.

Event Activities and Commitment

The event featured various activities aimed at fostering environmental awareness, including:

  • Tree planting sessions to enhance green cover and air quality.
  • Environmental education workshops to teach students about climate issues.
  • Induction of student ambassadors to lead sustainability efforts in their schools.

COWA reaffirmed its commitment to building green schools, green borders, and a sustainable future through grassroots climate action. This initiative underscores the association's dedication to addressing environmental challenges at the community level, with a focus on empowering the next generation to take proactive steps towards a healthier planet.
