The federal government has received commendation for its continued support of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) despite the numerous challenges the scheme has faced since its inception over five decades ago.
Anniversary Celebration in Katsina
Mr. Okwor Evans, the NYSC Coordinator in Katsina State, made this statement on Friday during the 53rd anniversary celebration of the scheme, which was attended by staff and corps members in the state. He described the anniversary as a moment of joy and appreciation, emphasizing that the NYSC remains one of Nigeria's most enduring institutions since its establishment in 1973 under the administration of General Yakubu Gowon.
Enduring Relevance of NYSC
Evans noted that the relevance of the NYSC in nation-building and national integration cannot be overstated. He called on corps members and staff to uphold and sustain the ideals of the scheme. He also urged corps members to remain dedicated throughout their service year and to ensure that their actions reflect the values instilled during their orientation course.
Activities Marking the Anniversary
During the celebration, corps members were educated on the history and objectives of the NYSC, including its role in promoting national unity, reconstruction, reconciliation, and rehabilitation. The importance of the Community Development Service (CDS), Skills Acquisition, and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program was also highlighted.
The event featured a colorful procession through the heart of the metropolitan area, which concluded with the cutting of the 53rd anniversary cake.
