The Department of Mass Communication at Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, has entered into a partnership with Dataphyte Academy to provide 300-level students with essential skills in data journalism. The collaboration aims to prepare students for the evolving demands of the media industry.
According to a statement signed by Oshuniran Sheriff Ola, Course Representative for Data Visualisation and Infographics in the department, the intensive two-day training took place on May 21 and 22, 2026, at the university's ICT Centre. The programme offered students both theoretical foundations and practical experience in data-driven storytelling, infographics, and data visualisation.
Dr. Zannu Prosper, Head of Department (HoD), noted that the initiative was launched in response to the growing need for data-literate journalists in the changing global media landscape. He emphasized the importance of equipping students with skills that are increasingly in demand.
Mr. Kehinde Ogunyale, lead facilitator from Dataphyte Academy, highlighted the critical role of data skills for journalists and media professionals. He stressed that future media practitioners must master data interpretation, pattern identification, and the visual presentation of complex information to succeed in modern journalism.
Dr. Steve Anu' Adesemoye, the course lecturer, elaborated on the transformative power of these skills. He stated, 'Learning infographics and data visualization in Nigeria is not just a technical skill; it is a power multiplier. It equips you to make sense of chaos, influence decisions, advance your career, and contribute to national development in an increasingly data-driven world. Whether you are a student, entrepreneur, civil servant, or professional, these skills help you move from “we have data” to “we know what to do with it.”'
The training was highly successful, introducing participants to the fundamentals of data visualisation and the strategic use of infographics to transform complex datasets into compelling, accessible stories. Hands-on practical exercises covered the full data journalism workflow, including sourcing, verification, cleaning, analysis, and visualisation using real-world datasets. Students also explored ethical considerations in data reporting.
At the closing ceremony, the department presented an Award of Excellence to Dataphyte Academy in recognition of its valuable contribution to advancing data journalism education. Awards of Recognition were also given to Dr. Alpha Ebole, Director of ICT, and Arc. Oluwagbemiga Odeniran, Director of Works and Services, for their support in ensuring the programme's success.
The partnership between LASUSTECH and Dataphyte Academy is expected to continue, with both institutions committed to strengthening data journalism capacity and promoting excellence in media practice in Nigeria's digital age.
