Rivers State Government Suspends School After Tragic Toddler Death
The Rivers State Government has taken decisive action by suspending Wisdom Gate International School, located in Eligbolo, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. This suspension follows the heartbreaking death of a two-year-old girl, Wynne Akekue, who lost her life in a tragic incident at the school.
Details of the Incident and Investigation
The unfortunate event occurred on March 17, 2026, when a poorly mounted bookshelf collapsed onto the toddler while she was asleep in her classroom. The State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, issued a statement on Thursday, April 16, confirming that an independent investigation has been conducted into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Dr. Nwagor expressed deep sympathy for the parents, Dr. Iasuaka Akekue and Mrs. Chinyerum Akekue, who have publicly accused the school management of negligence and an attempted cover-up. The commissioner emphasized the ministry's commitment to resolving all issues before the school can resume operations.
Official Statement and School Closure
In the official statement, Dr. Nwagor said, "The Rivers State Ministry of Education has carefully evaluated the tragic incident that occurred at one of our approved schools, Wisdom Gate International School, in Eligbolo, resulting in the death of a two-year-old girl on March 17, 2026." He added, "We deeply sympathise with the parents of the child over this irreparable loss, and respect their privacy during this moment of grief."
The commissioner further stated, "Consequently, Wisdom Gate International School, Campus 1, Eligbolo, is hereby suspended from operations and shall not resume academic activities until all issues surrounding the matter are fully resolved." This closure underscores the government's focus on ensuring safety and standards in educational institutions.
Parental Demands and Public Appeal
During a news briefing in Port Harcourt, the parents demanded justice for their daughter, highlighting concerns over the school's handling of the incident. The Ministry of Education has appealed to the public to avoid speculation and respect the family's privacy during this difficult time.
The Ministry of Education remains dedicated to providing quality assurance and maintaining safety standards in both public and private schools across Rivers State. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of rigorous safety protocols in educational settings to prevent such tragedies in the future.
