VCDF Foundation and Lagos State Government Collaborate to Transform Obele Community Schools
A significant partnership between the VCare for Development Foundation (VCDF), the Lagos State government, and Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited has led to the comprehensive renovation of Obele Community Senior and Junior Secondary Schools in Surulere, Lagos. This initiative, part of VCDF's Model School Initiative (MSI), aims to bolster access to quality education across Nigeria by addressing critical infrastructure deficits.
Addressing Infrastructure Challenges
Prior to the intervention, Obele Community Schools, which include primary, junior, and secondary levels, were grappling with severe infrastructure issues. These included dilapidated buildings, inadequate sanitation facilities, and a lack of proper teaching resources, all of which hindered effective learning. The rehabilitation project has successfully tackled these problems, delivering upgraded facilities designed to create a more conducive environment for students and teachers alike.
Official Handover and Stakeholder Remarks
At the grand commissioning ceremony held at the school premises, key stakeholders gathered to mark the project's completion. Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, emphasized that the renovation aligns with the state's broader development priorities. He highlighted that improved learning environments are crucial for enhancing student performance, well-being, and retention rates. Alli-Balogun praised VCDF and its partners for supporting the vision of safe, inclusive, and effective educational spaces.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, urged students and school administrators to ensure the proper use and maintenance of the new facilities to sustain their benefits. National Programme Manager for VCDF, James Odey, noted that this effort is part of a nationwide expansion of quality education access, with the Model School Initiative already benefiting over 28,000 individuals in Lagos, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States.
Detailed Upgrades and Improvements
The rehabilitation project encompassed extensive infrastructure enhancements at both schools. At Obele Senior High School, renovations included:
- 14 classrooms, 13 offices, and storage areas refurbished.
- Construction and equipping of three science laboratories.
- Replacement of the roof on a one-storey classroom block.
- Provision of 150 laboratory stools, 100 student desks, and teaching boards.
- New sanitation facilities and walkways constructed.
For the Junior School, improvements featured:
- Renovation of eight classrooms and 10 offices.
- Upgraded library facilities.
- Supply of desks, teachers' furniture, and ceiling fans.
- Installation of a new water system to enhance sanitation.
Alignment with Global Goals and Community Impact
This initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) four, which advocates for inclusive and equitable quality education. Stakeholders, including Sulaimon Yusuf, Chairman of Surulere Local Government, acknowledged that while infrastructure upgrades are vital, long-term success depends on maintenance, community ownership, and accountability. Community leaders and education experts present at the handover described the project as a transformative shift from previous deteriorating conditions, noting its potential to significantly improve teaching and learning outcomes. They emphasized that enhanced school environments could positively influence academic performance and contribute to broader social and economic development within the community.
