UK Student Visa 2026: Key Requirements, Costs, and New Post-Study Stay Rules
UK Student Visa 2026: Requirements, Costs, and New Stay Rules

The United Kingdom has confirmed that international students aged 16 and above can apply for a Student visa after securing admission from a licensed sponsor. The visa application fee remains at £558, and applicants must meet financial and English language conditions. From January 2027, Graduate visa holders will receive an 18-month post-study stay period instead of two years.

Who qualifies for a UK Student visa?

Applicants must have an offer from a recognised education provider licensed to sponsor international students. They must also demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover tuition and living expenses and meet English language requirements. Candidates aged 16 or 17 must submit proof of parental consent. Younger students attending independent schools may qualify under the Child Student visa category. The Student visa replaced the former Tier 4 (General) student visa route and remains the main pathway for international students entering the UK for academic programmes.

When should students apply?

Students applying from outside the UK can submit applications up to six months before their course starts. Those already in the UK can apply up to three months before their programme begins, provided their current visa has not expired. Visa decisions are typically issued within three weeks for overseas applicants and within eight weeks for those applying from inside the UK. Faster processing options may be available for an additional fee.

What are the costs?

The application fee is £558 for new applications made outside the UK and for extensions or visa switches within the country. Applicants must also pay the immigration healthcare surcharge, which varies based on the length of stay.

How long can students remain?

Students on degree-level programmes can generally stay for up to five years. Those on courses below degree level are usually allowed to stay for up to two years. Graduates may qualify for a Graduate visa, which currently allows a two-year stay if applied for on or before 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027, the post-study stay period reduces to 18 months for new Graduate visa applicants. Doctoral graduates remain eligible for a three-year stay.

What can students do on the visa?

Student visa holders can study and may be allowed to work depending on their course and academic calendar. However, they cannot claim public funds, work as self-employed individuals, work as professional sportspeople or coaches, or enrol in state-funded schools. Students must enter the UK only from the start date specified on their visa, even if their course begins later.
