The Nigerian political and educational community is in mourning following the death of a distinguished public servant, Alhaji Suleiman Lawal Kauru. The former Commissioner for Education in Kaduna State passed away at the age of 78 after a prolonged illness.
A Life of Service and Final Rites
Alhaji Suleiman Kauru died on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Shika. His passing marked the end of a lengthy battle with sickness. In accordance with Islamic traditions, his funeral was held promptly, and he was laid to rest in Zaria.
The funeral prayers took place at Filin Mallawa in the Tudun Wada area of Zaria. The ceremony drew a large crowd of mourners from various walks of life, reflecting the high esteem in which he was held. Family members, close associates, and numerous government officials gathered to pay their final respects to the late administrator.
A Stellar Career in Education and Administration
Kauru's professional life was defined by significant contributions to public service, particularly in the education sector. He is widely remembered as an experienced and effective administrator who held several strategic positions.
His most notable roles included serving as the Commissioner for Education for Kaduna State, where he oversaw the sector during a critical period. Following this, he brought his expertise to Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic in Zaria as its Rector. During his tenure there, he was credited with strengthening the institution's academic administration and leaving a lasting positive impact.
His service extended beyond the state level. Kauru also represented Kaduna State as a Commissioner in the Federal Character Commission and worked as the Director of the Namadi Campaign Organization. In his hometown, he was a respected traditional leader, holding the title of Jarman Kauru.
Legacy of Bridge-Building and Mourning
Alhaji Suleiman Kauru was known for maintaining strong relationships across the political spectrum. Associates described him as a bridge-builder who fostered cordial ties with prominent figures from different divides. His connections included former Vice President Namadi Sambo and Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko.
The stature of the late commissioner was evident in the composition of the mourners at his funeral. Attendees included former Kaduna State Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, the Emir of Kauru Alhaji Yau Shehu Usman, and a representative of the Emir of Zazzau. Serving and former members of the Kaduna State Executive Council were also present to honour his memory.
He is survived by two wives, many children, and grandchildren. His family and the wider community will remember him for his unwavering commitment to education, dedicated public service, and steadfast community leadership throughout Kaduna State.
