Enugu State Finally Secures ESUT Permanent Site After 19 Years
After nearly two decades of operating from an unprotected permanent site, the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) is finally getting perimeter fencing to address security challenges and land encroachment issues.
The Enugu State government has released approximately N1.4 billion for the fencing project at the university's Agbani campus, according to an announcement by the institution's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius Michaels Okolie.
Long-Awaited Security Solution
The fencing project comes nineteen years after ESUT was relocated to its permanent site at Agbani in Nkanu West Local Council Area. Despite the government providing offices and staff accommodation since the relocation, these facilities have remained largely unoccupied due to security concerns.
Professor Okolie explained that the lack of proper fencing has forced staff members to continue operating from Enugu urban area rather than utilizing the available accommodation on campus. This situation has significantly hindered the institution's growth and development aspirations over the years.
"We are hopeful that when the fencing is completed, it will help restore some of the things that are lacking in this school," the Vice-Chancellor stated. "We have facilities that should be mounted, but we cannot because you cannot guarantee their security."
Governor Mbah's Educational Transformation Agenda
The fencing initiative represents part of Governor Peter Mbah's broader efforts to reposition ESUT as a leading institution of higher learning. Beyond the security project, the state government has demonstrated substantial commitment to upgrading the university's infrastructure and facilities.
Professor Okolie revealed that Governor Mbah had released over N10 billion specifically for equipping the Nursing and Midwifery laboratory, signaling a comprehensive approach to improving the institution's educational offerings and research capabilities.
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that completing the perimeter fence would not only enhance security but also preserve the dignity of the institution and enable more effective management of campus operations. The project is expected to create a safer environment that will encourage staff to utilize the available residential facilities and ultimately contribute to the university's academic excellence.
