Nigeria's Procurement Experts Called to Embrace Sustainable Practices

Procurement professionals across Nigeria have received a strong appeal to implement global best practices in their operations, aiming to secure a sustainable future for coming generations. This crucial message emerged during a significant five-day international conference that kicked off in Lagos yesterday.

The International Conference on Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards is being hosted by the Sustainable Procurement, Environment and Social Standard Centre of Excellence (SPESSCE) at the University of Lagos. The event brings together diverse stakeholders under the theme 'Enhancing Sustainable Development Impact through Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards.'

Broad Participation for National Impact

The conference has attracted wide participation from various sectors crucial to Nigeria's development landscape. Attendees include representatives from:

  • Federal and state ministries and agencies
  • International development partners and donor organizations
  • Procurement professionals and project implementers
  • Academic institutions and research centers

This diverse gathering underscores the comprehensive approach needed to transform procurement practices nationwide.

Beyond Contractor Selection: Procurement as National Stability Tool

Professor Muyiwa Falaiye, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Management Services at UNILAG, emphasized that the conference aims to highlight the critical importance of proper procurement, environmental sustainability, and social inclusion. He challenged the common misconception about procurement's role.

"Many people believe procurement simply involves selecting contractors, but it extends far beyond that," Professor Falaiye stated. "It fundamentally connects with the necessity for national stability, which can only be achieved through transparent and enduring processes."

He further explained that the conference serves as a vital reminder to all stakeholders about the importance of correct procedures - from engaging appropriate contractors to maintaining sustainable environments and preparing for unborn generations.

Holistic Approach to Project Planning

Dr. Joshua Atah, National Coordinator of the SPESSCE project in Nigeria, stressed the interconnected nature of procurement with social and environmental considerations. He emphasized that these elements must be comprehensively integrated into every project and program planning process in the country.

"This conference focuses on awareness-building and encouraging practitioners to recognize the need for professionalization," Dr. Atah noted. "Participants need to enhance their knowledge across three broad areas and undergo proper certification and licensing processes to practice effectively in each domain."

The theme was specifically chosen to broaden perspectives about environmental and social standards and their profound impact on development outcomes.

Global Shift Towards Sustainable Procurement

Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, Director General of the Bureau of Public Procurement, highlighted the global transition from traditional procurement methods to sustainable approaches. This evolution requires considering environmental factors, climate issues, and social concerns within procurement processes.

"This conference opens our eyes to global best practices," Dr. Adedokun asserted. "By adopting these standards, we can improve our documentation to align with international benchmarks, thereby enhancing Nigeria's global respect and standing."

Professor James Akanmu, Director of UNILAG SPESSCE, concluded by urging all participants to consistently incorporate environmental and social considerations into their professional activities throughout Nigeria.

The conference represents a significant step toward transforming Nigeria's procurement landscape, positioning the country for sustainable development while addressing critical environmental and social concerns that affect future generations.
