LAUTECH Halts Academic Activities Following Student's Tragic Demise

The academic environment at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Iseyin campus, has been brought to a standstill following a tragic incident that claimed the life of a student. The university management has approved an immediate two-week suspension of all academic activities in response to the devastating event.

Details of the Fatal Incident

Miss Afolayan Oluwadarasimi Roseline, a 200-level student in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, lost her life in a fatal accident. The incident occurred on the morning of Friday, November 7, 2025, along the busy Iseyin/Saki Road in Oyo State. Reports indicate that the young student was on her way to refill her gas cylinder when a commercial bus driver, operating recklessly, struck her from behind. The impact proved fatal.

In a cruel twist, the driver responsible for the accident did not stop to render assistance or take responsibility. Instead, he fled the scene, leaving the victim behind. This act of abandonment incited other students who discovered the scene, leading them to stage a protest. In their grief and anger, the students set the commercial vehicle involved in the accident ablaze.

University's Official Response and Suspension

The Registrar of the institution, Olayinka Balogun, officially confirmed the heartbreaking incident on Saturday. In a statement released by the management, the university expressed its profound regret and deep sorrow over the loss.

The statement read, in part: "The management of LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, deeply regrets to announce the tragic passing of a 200-level student... who was fatally wounded by a hit-and-run driver in Iseyin. This heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow over our university community, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased."

In light of the grievous loss and the significant emotional toll it has taken on students and staff, the university management took decisive action. A two-week suspension of academic activities at the Iseyin campus was approved, effective immediately. As a consequence, all students belonging to the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources are to proceed on a two-week break.

Academic activities are expected to resume on Monday, November 24, 2025. The management has clarified that officers on essential duties will be informed through the usual channels if their presence is required during the suspension period. Registrar Olayinka Balogun urged all students to prioritize their safety, support one another during this difficult time, and honour the memory of their departed colleague.
