St. George's University Opens August 2026 Intake for African Students
SGU August 2026 Intake for African Students Now Open

St. George's University School of Medicine (SGU) in Grenada, West Indies, has officially opened applications for its August 2026 intake, specifically targeting students from Africa. The announcement was made in a press release on Tuesday, highlighting that the intake is designed to align with the academic calendar in the region, thus removing the need for a gap year.

Global Reach and Alumni Network

SGU boasts decades of experience in training international medical students and has cultivated a global alumni network of over 25,000 graduates practicing in more than 50 countries. In 2026, SGU students secured over 800 US residency positions across 23 specialties, demonstrating the university's strong track record in supporting graduates' medical training.

Clinical Training Opportunities

The university has established extensive clinical training opportunities at over 75 affiliated hospitals and health centers in the US and UK. This network reflects SGU's commitment to providing rigorous medical training and preparing students for successful careers.

Academic Partnership with Northumbria University

Since 2007, SGU has maintained an academic partnership with Northumbria University (NU) in the United Kingdom. This collaboration allows eligible students to complete part of their studies in the UK. Successful candidates from the August intake can choose to begin their medical education either at the SGU campus in Grenada or at NU in the UK.

Dual Degree Qualification

Upon completing their studies, students will earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from SGU and a Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSci) degree from NU. This powerful dual qualification is designed to meet global healthcare needs and enhance career prospects.

Support for African Students

Johannes Kraus, Regional Director for Africa at SGU, emphasized the importance of timing for African students pursuing a medical career. "The August intake is designed to support students transitioning into our MD programs after completing their local studies, in line with their academic qualifications. SGU's strong track record of graduates securing US residency placements highlights the global career pathways available to our students across Africa," he said.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

To support students from diverse backgrounds, SGU offers a range of financial aid and scholarship opportunities for international students. These include academic merit-based scholarships such as the SGU Medical Scholar Award, which is available to eligible high-achieving students from international markets, including Africa. This support helps reduce financial barriers for students pursuing medical education abroad.
