The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) has published its 2026 Global 2000 list, highlighting the best universities worldwide. Out of 21,291 institutions evaluated, five Nigerian universities secured a place among the top 2000.
Top Five Universities in Nigeria According to CWUR 2026
The University of Ibadan (UI) in Oyo State is ranked first in Nigeria and 1047th globally. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in Enugu State follows at second place, holding the 1533rd global position. The University of Lagos (UNILAG) in Akoka is third in Nigeria and 1683rd worldwide. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria, Kaduna State, takes fourth place with a global rank of 1779. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, completes the top five, ranked 1884th globally.
How CWUR Determines University Rankings
CWUR employs seven objective indicators grouped into four areas to assess universities:
- Education (25%): Based on the academic success of alumni relative to university size.
- Employability (25%): Based on the professional success of alumni relative to university size.
- Faculty (10%): Measured by the number of faculty members with top academic distinctions.
- Research Output (10%): Total number of research articles.
Additional research metrics include quality of publications, influence, and citations, each weighted at 10%.
Other Notable University Rankings
Previously, the University of Ibadan also emerged as Nigeria's top institution in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, with only UI and UNILAG making the global top 1000. A total of 51 Nigerian universities appeared in that ranking.
For postgraduate studies, leading Nigerian universities for master's programmes include the University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, University of Ilorin, and Covenant University, based on reputation, research output, and student experience.
