Ifeosa Anwulika Nkem Onyekpe, a first-class honours graduate in History and Strategic Studies from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has achieved a significant milestone by earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from Harvard University. The Nigerian scholar graduated from the prestigious institution on May 28, 2026, marking the culmination of years of dedication and perseverance.
A Dream Realized
In a LinkedIn post dated June 13, Anwulika, who is also the founder of The Hope Library, expressed that her graduation still feels like a dream. She conveyed deep gratitude to her younger self for having the courage to dream of attending Harvard University. She recalled declaring during a school assembly at her secondary school that she would one day go to Harvard, a declaration that has now become a reality.
Anwulika shared her journey, including the moment of self-doubt on the night she was about to submit her Harvard application. She almost did not proceed due to fear, questioning whether Harvard was truly possible for her. However, she overcame that hesitation and went on to receive her admission letter. Reflecting on her departure from Nigeria to begin her studies, she noted the uncertainty she felt but emphasized that she has now graduated from a school she once only saw in her dreams.
Overcoming Self-Doubt
She wrote in her post: "I graduated from Harvard University with a PhD on May 28, 2026. It still feels like a dream. I am grateful to the shy little girl who had the courage to dream, and who gave me the courage to go farther than I ever imagined. I remember saying this one day at the assembly ground of ISL (my secondary school): ‘I’ll go to Harvard one day.’ I didn’t know how it’d happen. I didn’t know the way. But I held onto it with faith."
She continued: "I also remember the night I was about to turn in my Harvard application. I almost didn’t, because I had become afraid, and I wondered if Harvard could really happen for me. I remember the day I got the news of my admission— I was going to Harvard. Harvard. And I remember the day I left Nigeria to begin, with a stomach that was knotted from the uncertainty of what the journey held for me. Today, a month after defending my PhD, I’ll be graduating from a school I only saw in my dreams."
