Monumental Tribute to a Football Legend
Argentina has unveiled a giant 85-foot statue of Lionel Messi in the remote town of Cutral Co, located in the Patagonia region. The towering monument, crafted by local sculptor Aldo Beroisa over 18 months, celebrates the football icon's unparalleled achievements, particularly his role in leading Argentina to victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Capturing an Iconic Moment
The statue depicts Messi in a moment of triumph: clutching his national team jersey and pointing to the sky. This pose mirrors the celebration he performed after scoring in the World Cup final at Lusail Stadium, a gesture dedicated to his late grandmother. Beroisa emphasized the significance of the project, stating, "He is Argentina's natural ambassador. For me, it was very important, not only as an artist but as an Argentine."
Impact on a Small Town
Cutral Co, traditionally known for its industrial base rather than tourism, has experienced a surge in visitors since the statue's inauguration. The sculpture has transformed the town into a pilgrimage site for football fans, boosting local tourism and putting Cutral Co on the map as a destination for sports enthusiasts. The statue stands as a permanent tribute to Messi's legacy, which includes breaking Miroslav Klose's record for most goals in World Cup history during the 2022 tournament.
