Laverne Cox Shares Memorable Met Gala Moment with Naomi Campbell
Actress and transgender advocate Laverne Cox has opened up about a striking encounter with supermodel Naomi Campbell at the Met Gala, describing it as one of her most unforgettable fashion moments. In an upcoming episode of Bronwyn Newport's 'Walk-In' Substack series, Cox recounted how Campbell appeared to dismiss a request from photographers to pose alongside Cox and Bella Hadid.
The Incident Unfolds
Cox explained that she was already posing for photos with Hadid when photographers called out to Campbell, urging her to join them. According to Cox, Campbell stopped, gave her a deliberate look from head to toe, and then walked away without engaging. Rather than feeling offended, Cox embraced the moment. 'It was the greatest honor in the world. The fact that I got to see that live? She was like… ‘Hmmm, no.’ And walked away,' Cox said.
Cox's Perspective on the Shade
Initially hesitant to share the story, Cox later joked that Campbell was fully aware of her actions. 'She knows she did it!' Cox exclaimed. However, she emphasized that there is no animosity between them, noting that Campbell has always been kind in other interactions. 'Naomi and I are cool. I’ve met Naomi many times. She’s always sweet to me. [At] that moment, she just wasn’t feeling it!' Cox told Newport.
Iconic Fashion Reputation
Cox added that Campbell's reaction was particularly memorable given the supermodel's iconic status. 'But that look [she gave me] – was so iconic. Like, to be shaded by Naomi Campbell?' she said. Cox made her Met Gala debut in 2019 wearing a Christian Siriano design and has since become a prominent figure in fashion, collecting pieces from designers like Thierry Mugler.
