The Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, FMACTCE, has officially delayed the 2025 National Festival of Arts and Culture, NAFEST. The event was originally set to begin on Saturday, 22nd November 2025, in Enugu State.
Reason for the Postponement
In a press release signed by Dr. Nneka Ikem Anibeze, the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Minister, the Ministry explained its decision. The move follows a careful review of the national mood and recent distressing incidents of insecurity that have impacted various regions. The statement cited a need for solidarity with affected families and communities, and deep respect for those who have lost their lives.
Hannatu Musa Musawa, the Minister, approved the postponement after consulting with key stakeholders. The government believes it is more respectful and responsible to delay the festival during a period of national grieving rather than proceed as planned.
NAFEST's Role in National Unity
The statement highlighted the significant role that NAFEST plays in nation-building. It is a powerful event that brings Nigerians together, strengthens social cohesion, and serves as a platform for cultural diplomacy. The festival is one of the few national events that can project a true image of Nigeria—one of unity, inclusiveness, and hospitality.
This year's edition was highly anticipated, with over 28 States already present in Enugu for preparations. It was poised to demonstrate the country's resilience and openness. However, the Federal Government decided that empathy and national unity must take precedence.
Next Steps and Future Plans
The Ministry has assured the public that a new date for NAFEST 2025 will be announced soon. This will follow further discussions with state governments, cultural institutions, and security agencies. The goal is to ensure the festival takes place in an atmosphere that is fitting for a national celebration.
The Ministry also expressed its gratitude to all participating States, cultural troupes, partners, and the Nigerian public for their understanding. It reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to showcasing Nigeria's rich cultural diversity and promised an even stronger and more unifying NAFEST at the appropriate time.
