Ogun State and Artnovation to Showcase African Culture at Milan Design Week 2026

In a significant cultural and economic initiative, the Ogun State Government has announced a partnership with Artnovation to showcase African culture on the global stage at the 2026 Milan Design Week in Italy. The event is scheduled to take place from April 22 to 26, 2026, and will feature an exhibition themed "The Rock That Remembers," focusing on Ogun State's rich cultural heritage, tourism assets, and investment opportunities, with a particular emphasis on the iconic Olumo Rock.

Strategic Collaboration for Creative Economy Growth

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State officially launched the Artnovation: AfroItalian Renaissance exhibition at the Italian Consulate in Lagos. During the launch, he emphasized that this collaboration is a strategic move aimed at strengthening the state's creative economy and deepening cultural and economic ties with Italy. Abiodun highlighted the state's commitment to leveraging creativity as a tool for economic growth, job creation, tourism development, and sustainable revenue generation.

"With our partnership with the Italian Consulate in Lagos and the Creative Youth Community Development Initiative, Ogun State is positioned to lead Nigeria's creative economy," Governor Abiodun stated. He further explained that the state's participation in Milan Design Week will enhance its international visibility, open up new trade opportunities, and foster stronger collaboration with Italy. The governor noted that the government's support for arts, culture, and indigenous enterprises, such as Adire, along with the renewal of Olumo Rock, reflects a broader development agenda aimed at promoting sustainable growth.

Exhibition Details and Highlights

Chief Curator of Artnovation, Foluke Michael, provided detailed information about the exhibition schedule and highlights. An exclusive VIP screening will be held on April 22 at Collegiate Milano Bovisa, Piazza Emilio Alfieri 5, Milan, followed by the main exhibition running from April 23 to 26. One of the major highlights of the program is a special session titled "From the Rock to the World," scheduled for April 23 at 4:00 p.m.

The exhibition will feature a diverse array of artistic works, including:

  • Five paintings
  • Five fashion installations
  • Hand-painted textures
  • Indigenous Abeokuta fabrics, such as Adire, combined with Milanese lace

According to Michael, this initiative is designed to connect storytelling, art, fashion, and design in innovative ways that create fresh opportunities for innovation, partnership, and trade. She explained that the project symbolically links Olumo Rock and the Duomo di Milano, as well as the European Renaissance and African heritage, to generate new economic and cultural possibilities.

"The exhibition explores how landscapes and structures preserve memory, shape identity, and inspire contemporary design," Michael said. This approach aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of African culture while promoting cross-cultural exchange and economic development.

Broader Implications and Future Prospects

This collaboration between Ogun State and Artnovation represents a forward-thinking effort to position Nigeria's creative sector on the international map. By participating in prestigious events like Milan Design Week, Ogun State aims to attract global attention to its cultural assets and investment potential. The focus on Olumo Rock, a historical and tourist landmark, underscores the state's dedication to preserving and promoting its heritage while exploring modern applications in design and art.

The initiative also aligns with broader trends in cultural diplomacy and economic diversification, as it seeks to build lasting partnerships with Italy and other international stakeholders. Through such engagements, Ogun State hopes to drive sustainable development, create employment opportunities, and enhance its reputation as a hub for creativity and innovation in Africa.
