The Lagos Branch of the Edo College Old Boys Association (ECOBA) has celebrated one of its own, bestowing a significant honour on a former student for his exemplary life and dedication. Joseph Akhigbe was named the Distinguished Old Boy of the Year for 2025 during a recent ceremony, recognising his personal achievements and steadfast commitment to the values instilled by the renowned institution.
A Night of Recognition and Celebration
At the event held on 23 December 2025, Akhigbe, remembered by many as a formidable striker during his time at Edo College, received the prestigious award. In his acceptance speech, he expressed profound gratitude to the association for the recognition. He went further to make a firm commitment, pledging to deepen his contributions to both his alma mater and the wider alumni network, ensuring the school's legacy continues to thrive.
Alumni Body Demonstrates Resilience and Vision
The Chairman of ECOBA's Lagos Branch, Charles Isa, used the occasion to highlight the association's strength and activity. He pointed out that despite facing prevailing economic headwinds, the branch had shown remarkable resilience by successfully organising and hosting three major events within the year 2025. This achievement underscores the vibrant and active nature of the alumni community.
The ceremony also featured insightful addresses focusing on the future. The Chairman of the Occasion, Major General Julius Ohioze Osifo (Rtd.), delivered a forward-looking charge to the alumni. He urged members to fully embrace modern technology and to actively consider the potential of integrating artificial intelligence into Edo College's academic framework. This call to action points towards a future where tradition meets innovation in education.
Expanding Legacy Through Endowment and Awards
Further developments to support the school were announced by Professor Samuel Alpata, Chairman of the Edo College Endowment and Legacy Fund (ELEF). He revealed that a total of 26 prizes were awarded to deserving students this year. Looking ahead, Professor Alpata shared ambitious plans to introduce even more awards. These new accolades will be specifically linked to both academic excellence and extracurricular activities, aiming to foster a well-rounded development for current students of Edo College.
The event served not only as a celebration of Joseph Akhigbe's individual accomplishments but also as a powerful demonstration of the enduring bond among Edo College alumni and their collective commitment to nurturing the school's future generations.
