FG Congratulates INEC Boss Amupitan on UNIJOS Award

The Federal Government has officially extended its congratulations to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN), following his recognition by the University of Jos. The university honoured him with its prestigious 'Great Ambassador of the University of Jos' award.

A Recognition of Lifelong Service

In a formal letter signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the government praised the award as a fitting acknowledgment of Amupitan's dedication. The letter, referenced SGF.5/S.4/T/867 and dated 15th December 2025, stated that the honour reflects his commitment to academic excellence, legal scholarship, and selfless national service.

Akume emphasised that the recognition from UNIJOS goes beyond a simple alumni gesture. He described it as a validation of the INEC chairman's significant impact on the nation. "This prestigious honour is a fitting tribute to your exemplary leadership, sterling public service, and enduring commitment to democratic governance, national development, and institutional integrity," the SGF wrote.

Amupitan's Distinguished Career and UNIJOS Ties

The award was presented during the University of Jos's 50th Alumni Anniversary and combined 35th and 36th convocation ceremony in Jos. Professor Amupitan's connection to the institution is deep and longstanding. He earned an LLM from UNIJOS in 1993 and later a PhD in Law in 2007. His academic prowess led to his promotion to the rank of Professor of Law in 2008.

Akume highlighted this special bond, noting, "The University of Jos, by this award, has not only celebrated an illustrious alumnus but has also affirmed the positive impact of its graduates on the nation and beyond."

A Profile of Legal and Administrative Excellence

Beyond his current role at INEC, Professor Amupitan is celebrated as one of Nigeria's foremost legal minds. His elevation to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2014 cemented his status. He is a prolific scholar with over 50 publications, focusing on areas like:

  • Law of Evidence
  • Corporate Governance and Company Law
  • Privatisation Law
  • Reforms in Nigeria’s Electoral Jurisprudence

His administrative experience is equally impressive. Prior to leading INEC, he served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos. He also held key positions such as Dean of the Faculty of Law (2008–2014) and was the Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of Council at Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU).

The Federal Government expressed confidence that this latest accolade will further strengthen Amupitan's resolve to ensure transparent and credible electoral processes for Nigeria. In a statement relayed by the INEC Chairman's Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, Akume extended his best wishes for continued health, wisdom, and success in the chairman's noble duties.

The 'Great Ambassador' award is one of the highest honours the University of Jos bestows upon its alumni, reserved for those who have reached the peak of their professions while upholding the highest ethical standards.
