The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, has issued a powerful call for political appointees and public office holders to significantly enhance their contributions to good governance. This appeal was central to the NUJ Lagos State 2025 Press Week Gala and Awards Night, a prestigious event held last Friday in Ikeja.
A Night Celebrating Excellence and Responsibility
The gala served a dual purpose: to celebrate media professionals and public office holders who have distinguished themselves in their fields, and to reinforce the critical role of leadership in national development. The union emphasized that Nigeria's progress hinges not only on journalists who report the news but equally on the decision-makers whose actions affect daily life. It urged leaders to consistently demonstrate transparency, accountability, and a genuine commitment to the people they serve.
Adeleye Ajayi, the Chairman of the NUJ Lagos State Council, described the yearly gathering as one of the most anticipated events on the union's calendar. He stated that the night was dedicated to celebrating excellence, professionalism, and the resilient spirit of Nigerian journalists.
Reaffirming Journalistic Ethics and Shared Responsibility
In his address, Chairman Ajayi framed the Press Week as a period for reflection, renewal, and rededication. He highlighted the meaningful discussions held over the preceding days, which served to reaffirm the core values guiding the journalism profession.
"As journalists, our calling comes with enormous responsibility," Ajayi declared. "In a world increasingly shaped by misinformation, divisive narratives, and the pressures of digital speed, I urge every media professional here to recommit to the ideals of accuracy, fairness, balance, and ethical reporting."
He powerfully articulated the media's vital role, noting that the stories journalists tell shape the nation, influence policies, and mould public opinion. He, therefore, called for the upholding of the highest standards every single day.
Extending this call for integrity beyond the newsroom, Ajayi directly addressed the nation's leaders. "In the same spirit, I urge our leaders to demonstrate transparency, accountability, and commitment to the people they serve. Public governance is a shared responsibility, and political appointees must show exemplary leadership, openness to media scrutiny, and readiness to engage constructively with journalists."
Honouring Distinguished Contributions
The event was also a platform to honour individuals for their exceptional contributions. Among the award recipients was Olusina Thorpe, the former Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Information and Strategy, who was recognised for his steadfast support of the NUJ. In his response, Thorpe reaffirmed his commitment to continually supporting the union.

- Olatunji Bello, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
- Idris Aregbe, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Arts, and Culture.
