Tinubu Praises DSS DG Ajayi for IPI Press Freedom Award
Tinubu Hails DSS DG on IPI Press Freedom Honour

President Bola Tinubu has publicly commended the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, for a prestigious international recognition of his commitment to a free press.

DSS Chief Honoured for Media Freedom Advocacy

The Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI) presented Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi with a commendation award during its Annual Conference. The event took place on December 2, 2025, in Abuja.

In its citation, the IPI highlighted that since his appointment as DSS Director-General in late August 2024, Ajayi has demonstrated a notable and strong dedication to the principles of press freedom. The institute also acknowledged his respect for journalists and media organisations operating across Nigeria.

A Deliberate Encouragement for Others

The IPI clarified the intent behind the award, stating it was given not just to recognise Ajayi's existing credentials but to motivate him to achieve more. Furthermore, the gesture aims to inspire other public officials, institutions, and organisations to emulate his positive example in engaging with the media.

President Tinubu warmly welcomed this recognition from the esteemed global journalism body. He praised the DSS leader for his efforts in promoting press freedom, upholding citizens' rights, and ensuring the agency operates within the confines of the law.

A New Narrative for Security-Media Relations

The President affirmed that under Ajayi's stewardship, the DSS is actively changing the old narrative of hostility towards the press. Instead, the agency is now fostering an atmosphere conducive to dialogue and constructive engagement with the public.

Tinubu issued a direct call to action, urging other security agencies and government officials to follow the DSS's lead. He emphasised the need to view the media as essential partners in national development, rather than as adversaries.

The President also encouraged the DSS to continue its progressive work in creating a supportive environment for journalists. This, he noted, aligns with the constitutional provision that empowers the media to hold public officials accountable, a cornerstone of a vibrant democracy.
