A new biography on Nigeria's former leader, Muhammadu Buhari, has categorically dismissed widespread rumours that official state documents were signed on his behalf without his knowledge or consent during his presidency.
Book Sets the Record Straight on Signing Authority
The book, titled 'From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari', was presented to the public in Abuja on Monday, December 15. Its author, Dr. Charles Omole, the Director-General of the Institute for Police and Security Policy Research (IPSPR), directly addressed allegations that a 'presidential stamp' was used or that Buhari's former Private Secretary, Tunde Sabiu, wielded undue influence over documentation.
Dr. Omole, drawing from extensive research and accounts from close aides, stated a clear fact: "There was no stamp. Buhari signed the documents himself, with a pen. That is the simple fact." The book emphasises that the late president remained firmly in control of all decision-making and documentation processes throughout his tenure from 2015 to 2023.
Insights from Inner Circle and Security Chiefs
To compile the biography, the author spoke with individuals who witnessed key moments in Buhari's life, from his birth to his death. One crucial account came from Bashir Abubakar Idris, the former Chief Security Officer to the President, who affirmed Buhari's hands-on control.
The book also includes commendations from security chiefs who served under Buhari. Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (Rtd), the former Chief of Naval Staff, highlighted Buhari's strategic focus on enhancing national and maritime security, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea. Similarly, former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar praised Buhari's integrity and his administration's role in driving decisive reforms within the Nigerian Police Force towards greater professionalism and accountability.
Addressing Rumours and Aisha Buhari's Revelations
The biography seeks to provide answers to several lingering questions about Buhari's administration and personal life. It touches on the atmosphere of rumours within the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock.
In a related context, the book's narrative aligns with past revelations by former First Lady Aisha Buhari, who had previously disclosed how gossip within the villa led her husband to alter his habits, including locking his door, due to unfounded fears.
The late President Muhammadu Buhari, a retired Major General and Nigeria's democratically elected leader from 2015 to 2023, passed away in a London hospital on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82. This new biography aims to contribute a documented perspective to the complex legacy of his eight years in office.
