A Nigerian woman named Uche, who has a beard, has expressed her frustration with fellow Nigerians who address her as 'Nne' (which means mother in Igbo) while simultaneously questioning her gender.
Uche's Outburst
In a post that has since gone viral, Uche wrote: 'Honestly, I don't understand these my Naija people ooo. Which one is Nne, Are you a man or a woman? Nne kwa, for person you never still understand the gender.'
Her statement highlights the confusion and annoyance she feels when people use a term of endearment typically reserved for women, yet they are uncertain about her gender identity.
Cultural Context
In many Nigerian cultures, particularly among the Igbo, 'Nne' is a respectful term for a mother or an older woman. However, Uche's experience shows that her beard causes some people to question whether she is male or female, leading to what she sees as contradictory behavior.
The post has sparked discussions on social media about gender norms, respect, and the assumptions people make based on physical appearance.
