Viral Video Shows Cucumber Vendor Using Soap at Market
A TikTok video posted by user @TheFoodEnthusiast has ignited a heated online debate after capturing a cucumber seller at an outdoor market in Nigeria apparently washing cucumbers with soap. The clip shows a vendor in a black and yellow striped top leaning over a black bucket, scrubbing cucumbers with a cloth and water, while what appears to be soap is visible.
The user who shared the clip said the sight stopped her from buying cucumbers and expressed concern about how the produce had been handled before. She urged people to always rinse cucumbers thoroughly under running water or peel the skin to be safe. Her bigger concern was for cucumbers she had already purchased without knowing their handling history.
Divided Reactions from Social Media Users
Viewers were split in their responses. Some praised the seller for cleaning the produce, while others raised hygiene concerns. Commenter @foxylady7000 said: "Thank GOD they Washing them, there is a virus that's critical and it's linked to the vegetables." Another user, @sam_s916, argued: "You wash all your plates with soap and eat right off of them. What's the difference?"
@FruitsieTv added: "You want your cucumbers with chemicals and pesticides or you want them clean." However, @Ammy noted: "Thats why i dey wash my fruits with salt or white venegar. We do not have agencies that are seriously controlling wht we consume in nigeria so we have to tale care of ourselves."
Context and Previous Reports
The debate comes amid broader concerns about food safety and regulation in Nigeria. In a separate incident reported by Legit.ng, a smart Nigerian lady dealt with a scammer who sent a fake alert for goods; she packed dirty nylons instead and sent them to the person. The cucumber video has amassed thousands of views and comments, reflecting the public's sensitivity to food handling practices.
