Nigerian disc jockey and entrepreneur Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, has revealed that she receives marriage proposals every day but has found a unique way to sidestep the pressure to settle down. In an interview with Marie Claire published on Thursday, Cuppy explained that her ever-expanding collection of academic qualifications serves as a convenient excuse whenever the topic of marriage arises, particularly with her grandmother.
Certificates as a Shield
“I call it avoidance of marriage,” Cuppy said. “Every time my grandma asks, ‘Where's your husband?’, I show her a new certificate.” The DJ, who holds degrees from New York University, the University of Oxford, and King's College London, is already eyeing another qualification to add to her list.
According to Cuppy, the proposals are not limited to her fans. “I get marriage proposals every day. And I'm not even talking about fans. Everyone is apparently trying to help me when I have not asked to be helped,” she said.
Education as a Tool for Understanding
Beyond dodging marriage questions, Cuppy’s academic pursuits are deeply tied to her professional ambitions. She explained, “With entertainment, I have never just wanted to participate. I want to understand who controls what and learn as much about their processes as possible.” Her degrees from prestigious institutions have equipped her with insights into the industries she operates in, from music to philanthropy.
Cuppy also shared a heartfelt moment involving her father, billionaire businessman Femi Otedola. She recalled an incident at an airport where someone recognised her father only as “Cuppy's dad.” “It made me feel good because normally, I'm Femi's daughter, but on that day, to that person, he was my dad,” she said.
Philanthropy vs. Charity
In the same interview, Cuppy distinguished between charity and true philanthropy. “Charity is just giving because you want to,” she explained. “Being a philanthropist, though, is about making a lasting difference. It's about long-lasting results.” Her philanthropic efforts, particularly through her Cuppy Foundation, focus on education and youth empowerment in Africa.
For now, marriage remains on hold, with Cuppy seemingly content to let her next degree answer the question for her. Her story resonates with many young women navigating societal expectations while pursuing personal and professional growth.
